La casa roja and its gardens (outside)
La Casa Roja, where you are now, is a stately home that belonged to Leopoldo Pérez Díaz in the early 20th century (Mr Leopoldo, for business reasons, emigrated to La Guaira in Venezuela, from where he sent money to have his house built); it is a fine example of Indiano architecture.
Over the years, after passing through several owners, it became a hotel and came to be known as La Casa Roja. In 1994, it was restored by the Town Council, and since then, the museum collections currently on display have been open to visitors.
We recommend you take a stroll around the exterior and admire its four neoclassical façades; it is a building of elegant proportions, surrounded by gardens featuring trees brought from the New World.
Inside, the main staircase—made entirely of wood—and the small courtyard, where the traditional ‘destiladera’ stands out, are particularly striking.
