Embroidery, the kitchen. (room 3)
The old-fashioned kitchen was a cosy haven within the home and a central hub. There, you would find linen tablecloths on the tables, painstakingly embroidered, whilst hand-woven tea towels and curtains added an air of simplicity and care.
Each textile not only served a practical purpose, but also held the memories of those who had made it.
Materials such as linen or cotton were used to make tablecloths, tea towels, bread baskets, curtains and aprons. These were decorated with embroidery and lace, mainly featuring floral and geometric motifs.
If we look at the shelves, we can see several examples:
On the first shelf, we see towels made using lost stitch (4) or devil’s stitch (2).
On the central shelf, we see examples of raised embroidery (5) or cross-stitch (2).
